Spell Checker

Real spell checking using your browser's own built-in dictionary - misspelled words get underlined as you type.

Why use this tool?

Check spelling using your browser's built-in dictionary: misspelled words are underlined as you type, and right-clicking shows suggestions.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste text into the box.
  2. Look for underlined words.
  3. Right-click a word to choose a correction.

How it works

The text box uses your browser's own spell checker, the same one that underlines mistakes in email and web forms. Misspelled words get a red wavy underline as you type. Right-click an underlined word to see suggested corrections, or to add a word such as a name or technical term to your dictionary so it isn't flagged again.

Which dictionary is used depends on your browser and system language settings. If correct words in another language are being underlined, add that language in your browser's language or spell-check settings.

Privacy

KitLoop doesn't send your text anywhere. Basic spell checking in browsers runs on your device. Some browsers offer an optional enhanced mode that sends text to an online service for better suggestions; Chrome, for example, calls it Enhanced spell check and it's off unless you turn it on. Check your browser settings if that matters for what you're typing.

What a spell checker can't catch

A spell checker only knows whether each word exists. It won't notice a real word used in the wrong place, which is behind many of the most common mistakes: their, there and they're; your and you're; its and it's; affect and effect; then and than. Missing words and grammar errors also pass, because every word on its own is spelled correctly.

It will also flag correct words it doesn't know, such as names, brand names and new technical terms. That's not an error in your text, just a gap in the dictionary.

A quick proofreading routine

Fix the underlined words first. Then read the text aloud, or slowly line by line, which catches wrong words and missing words that a spell checker passes. Finally, check names, numbers and dates against the source, since those are rarely in any dictionary and the most damaging to get wrong.

Frequently asked questions

Why isn't anything underlined?

Spell checking may be turned off in your browser, or set to a different language. Turn it on in your browser's settings, or add your language.

Does it check grammar?

No. It checks spelling only. Words that are spelled correctly but used wrongly, like there instead of their, aren't flagged.

Is my text saved or uploaded?

KitLoop doesn't send it anywhere. Only an optional enhanced spell-check mode in your browser, if you've turned one on, would send text to an online service.
